Following Joe Hisaichi, another distinguished Japanese composer who among his many works wrote the beautiful theme from a 1960 film without dialogue directed by Kaneto Shindo. The theme, released in France, which explains the name, accompanies the extraordinary portrayal of an impoverished family living alone on the Seto Inland Sea, struggling to get by, and the tragedy which results when one of the young sons falls ill. With nothing but the sound of water and wind, and island life, but no words spoken, this is a glimpse into another world, harsh, and yet pure and dreamlike, with Hisaichi’s music, here using guitar, flute and choir, lifting the images to a magical level. A trailer for the film is also included below.
