Lush yet innovative, introspective folk-pop by English singer-songwriter and composer in his sixth album, influenced still by John Martyn, but pulling away from from the mainstream, the LP is filled with unusual sounds, rhythms and effects characteristic alternative guitar tunings and electronica to reflect his shock experience of two mini-strokes in 2022. It’s all the more remarkable considering those two transient ischaemic attacks, and short, interim track Total Eclipse, is designed to recreate that experience. But this is not a gloomy record. On Days of Lantana he sings “days are numbered”, and Richmond Avenue reflects fondly early childhood memories with his father, and the pull of the LP is the innovative sounds it creates, sometimes also with echoes of late-80s Talk Talk. Other standouts include Life In The Time, Couldn’t Make It Up, Walking Backwards, Interim of Sense and Little Plant. Out on Island / Universal.
