Luxuriant, grandiose yet also melancholy high-quality synth-pop by the English artist Jasmine van den Bogaerde (and great-niece of Dirk Bogarde) from Lymington, Hampshire, in a fifth LP that particularly evokes mid-80s Kate Bush and some current Caroline Polachek. Now 27, without being a household name, she’s been a big streaming success since doing her debut single at 15, a cover of Bon Iver's Skinny Love. With her full voice and big production values here’s dynamism aplenty here from the strident singles such as the string-led Raincatchers and synth-led Paradise Calling or Heartbreaker, to the tender, piano-based Your Arms or the dramatic Ruins I. But perhaps the standout is the more intimate I Wish I Was A Shooting Star (“Is anybody home upstairs? It’s been a shitty night …”) which, while channelling some classic soaring 80s pop motifs, feels the most personal and authentic. Out on Warner Music.
