Refreshing, energetic, upbeat big-chorus fuzzbox indie-pop by the four-piece from Brighton with echoes of big-sound styles ranging from Primal Scream to Girls Aloud to Garbage to Sigue Sigue Sputnik. In this second LP above all there is a pleasing bit of fuzzy dirt in their pop sound, not only in guitar, but also in singer Izzy Phillips’s voice. Opener I Like The Way You Die goes for that big chorus sounds, Run For Cover has a rockabilly element, Beaches has a clap-along style that is clearly designed for crowd-pleasing live shows and both these last two have vocals that echo Girls Aloud, with added brass. Back of the Bar is a lighter pop, while Believer, also with a pleasing brass element, has that classic early 90s syncopated rhythm used by Primal Scream and many others that appears to be coming back into vogue. The highly topical Disinfect has and ear-pricking vitality with bass line and clicks and screaming guitar line, while Summer ‘92 mixes glam rock with something of 90s Cardigans. Closing track Gabrielle is an acoustic melancholy ballad that always fits the quiet section at any gig. Clearly then Black Honey have all the tools and are raring to hit the mainstream with some live performances. They have cleverly put together an amalgam of pop and rock that may bring them big success. Out on Foxfive Records.
