Classy, classic soul full debut LP by the young Scottish singer from Edinburgh, following 2023’s EP, Black Is the New Gold with finely controlled, mature voice and influences from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Baby Huey, and William DeVaughn, as well as contemporaries Michael Kiwanuka and Jalen Ngonda. While the sounds are reminiscent of another era with orchestral accompaniment, simple funk guitar and drums and oodles of reverb, there’s unfiltered honesty and freshness to her lyrics and delivery, about driving need for independence on the upbeat pace and strong melody of standout single This Town, or the more stripped back, simmering L.M.T.F.A. (Leave Me the Fuck Alone). Guilt, a powerful, punchy pop-soul tune is also about relationships, references the excitement and fatal attraction but also mutual destruction of Bonnie & Clyde. Shaken By The Wind is a breezier, piano-based longing for freedom, Lanewood Pines soars with a classic soft-focus 70s style, and the title track closes the album with a simple syncopated beat and guitar chops to allow Combe’s voice to fully reverberate and express the freedom of that image. Timeless. Out on Modern Sky.
