A strong, sensitive, substantial 17-song debut LP by the 24-year-old south London singer-songwriter who combines a range of pop styles with gospel, R&B and indie with a very candid, personal lyrics. It lives to the hype of and includes the huge TikTok hit, Go from 2022, a soft guitar and R&B-style soulful number, and also a short film, with a recurring theme of addressing loneliness and identity and poor communication, with this addressed directly on the opener, Alone. Song after song combines commercially mainstream, strong, power ballad pop melodies with genuine emotion and beauty, and her undeniablyversatile voice, even if at times lyrics are a little cliched, overstated, literal and saccharine, such as on Live More & Love More, Some Things Don’t Last Forever, or This Is What Happens, with “this is what happens when you’re anxious, so damn anxious, I’m so anxious all the time”. It feels like a full-coverage album of self-healing and therapy, addressing problems of self and relationships with others, from End Game (“you’ll communicate your feelings …”), the jazzier Boy Crazy, the catchy People Pleaser (“I hate confrontation … being this way, learnt it from a young age”) Low Self Esteem, People Pleaser and a tender ode to her girlfriend, Jodie. There are many personal issues to address of course, but that’s what the early twenties are all about. A hugely talented singer whose star rating will surely continue to rise. Out on Since 93 / RCA / Sony.
