Uplifting and also poignant 70s style disco-funk-soul debut by the Californian artist who is disabled by spina bifida and scoliosis since birth, but shakes his tail feathers with style, panache, very much like “a time-travelling Delorean with Prince in the passenger seat”. Cola Boyy, aka Matthew Urango, has a high, nasal voice that works well with the funk style, and while his range is limited, the strength is very much in the music and attitude, largely positive, extolling inclusivity and accessibility, from Don’t Forget Your Neighborhood (featuring Avalanches, to Mailbox, the latter with fabulous horn sections. Other guest collaborators include Air’s Nicolas Godin, MGMT and LA keyboardist John Carroll Kirby. You Can Do It Is another highlight, while there is a darker, defiant number in the form of One of These Winters Will Take Me. Closing track Kid Born In Space is an extraordinary psychedelic journey. A great debut from an artist bursting with energy, humour and hope. Out on Record Makers/MGMT.
