Luxuriant genre-spanning rock, pop, country and more in this debut by the Belfast old schoolfriend duo of Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe, with echoes of artists from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, Shania Twain, HAIM, as well as contemporaries CMAT, and The Last Dinner Party. The pair garnered YouTube popularity busking cover versions of songs from Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love and Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound, and that broad taste is present in this debut release. Red Button for example has the repeat guitar thrumming notes and “who’s” instead of “oohs” of Stevie Nicks’ massive hit Edge of Seventeen, while Wilderness is goes full American rock with 80s pop synths. Stamp On It has a swaggering glam with overdubbed guitars and a touch of Shania Twain in the vcoal delivery, while So Damn Dangerous is slower and bluesier. There are many genres to dip into here, from the light summery pop of Every Night I Want You, the lovely acoustic folk-country First Aid Kit style of Glory Glory (I Am Free), the moody mainstream acoustic rock of Black Rain, or the toe-tapping country rock of Dead Man’s Heart, but perhaps they are at the best with the strutting, obsessional Stuck On You, or the country style Won’t Feel Like This Forever, a beautiful song reaching to recover from hurt. A wide umbrella of rock then, perhaps from a broad taste, but also designed to reach a big audience, and with stylish performance and panache, they might just succeed. Self-released.
