Variously written by members isolated during lockdown, the Manchester band’s ninth LP is a study in gentle, minimalism, filled with beautiful lyrical images and tender moments after 2019’s angrier, edgier, proggy Giants of All Sizes. Standouts include the title track, the skywatching Is It A Bird, Six Words, and after a series of consistent quiet tracks decorated with piano, Guy Garvey’s gentle vocals and oodles of space, woodwind decorated After The Eclipse with vocal harmonies, The Seldom Seen Kid, echoing the title of their best known acclaimed fourth album, also with lovely instrumentation, and the closing, more rousing, impassioned final track What Am I Without You. Out on Polydor.
