Fun, catchy, melodious, energetic, clever, mischievous clean-cut indie pop by the London five-piece with their second LP and consistent with debut What’s Inside Is More Than Just Ham. It’s hard not to get swept up in the energy and enthusiasm of these songs, witty, pointed, pacy, sprightly, and with that jangly intricate post-punk guitar sound that at times has echoes of XTC, such as on opener Better Than Last, the punchy The Real Thing, or Greasy Boy. Why Would I Lie? and also Truly Awful have beautifully bittersweet, gentle quality, and When I’m Feeling Strange is a perky toe-tapper. But there’s also an edge to their lyrics, aware of the trickiness of their industry, summed up in slow, ironic closing track Goodbye (So Long, Farewell), capturing the sheer level of difficulty bands must endure in touring, travelling and bureaucracy, especially in the post-Brexit age. Out on Submarine Cat Records.
