A beautifully intricate, delicate, intelligent and innovative new LP by the Canadian singer-songwriter with among others, a theme the many selves we possess and present, now, in the past and future. It’s her sixth full-length release, and since 2017’s wonderful Pleasure. As well as previous Song of the Day, In Lightning, there are many highlights here, such as multi-layered vocal harmonies of Hiding Out In The Open, the ethereal chorus of string layers and saxophones on the wonderfully uplifting and extraordinary Borrow Trouble, of which she says “began as a contemplative acoustic morality tale and shape shifted itself into the sound of trouble itself. It’s a mess that holds its own logic. It’s the convincing cacophony that thoughts can be.” The material here is inescapably coloured by the death of her father and the birth of her daughter, a light and shade that pervades throughout, from that louder track to the beautiful candid and moving Martyr Moves to the delicate acoustic guitars The Redwing and powerfully empathetic closing track Song For Sad Friends which elevates in a gorgeous coda of strings and vocal harmonies. A special, deep-thinking and aesthetically sensitive talent at the top of her game. Out on Polydor/ Universal.
