After 12 years away, the American pop trio of the irrepressible singer Beth Ditto, multi-instrumentalist Nathan "Brace Paine" Howdeshell and drummer Hannah Blilie return with set of punchy, candid, personal disco-punk-pop bangers, and produced by Rick Rubin. Ditto very wears her heart on her sleeve having, like Bililie, undergone a divorce, so this feels like a cathartic release, packed with upbeat sorrow with an air of defiance. Singles Crazy Again and Real Power are certainly two of the highlights, as well as opener Act of God, the crisp lo-level funk of post-breakup number Don’t Be Afraid, or the more upbeat Give It Up For Love, the darker, more reflective hue of Tell Me Something, the tender Light It UP, to the quieter closing track Peace and Quiet. It’s not quite the more radical, political side of Gossip we’ve grown to expect, but it’s great to have them back with catchy candid, emotional work. Out on Columbia Records.
