Explosive, punchy, sharp, witty, thrilling debut LP of 60s-style garage punk, anarchic rockabilly and 50s rock’n’roll by the duo of James Walbourne (The Pretenders) and Kristoffer Sonne (Chrissie Hynde) taking inspiration from Jerry Lee Lewis to The Stooges, The Cramps to The Black Keys. In this particularly entertaining-as-live side project that’s co-produced by David Wrench, most songs are snappily under 3 minutes (aside from the 4-minute lingering swagger of The Repenter or the rockin’ blues 3-minute, punchier Pixellated Polly) and this is partly why the album hits you between the ears like a wet fish in a storm. Opener All Cranked Up feels like the raw, crash-bang energy of early White Stripes (also derivate of course), but the standouts are perhaps the syncopated thrill of Buzzkill, the rollocking speed of Joyboy, or the screaming love song that also laments a great British institution – Jackie Works For The NHS. There’s never any time to be bored on this album, despite the recurring subject matter of pent-up frustration, such as on the blistering I’m So Bored With Being Bored, or All Cranked Up. And then there’s wild family protestation of My Brother Is An Only Child. And before you know it, 30 minutes have gone by, with final short track I Live In the City. Overall, a sandblaster to lament, a cathartic sonic tonic to torment. Out Psychonaut Sounds.
