A poetic latest release indeed North Carolina’s Sam Beam, packed with beautiful lyrics and melodies, articulate alternative folk, rock and country with flavours of Paul Simon and Cat Stevens, filled with vivid fictional and personal insights, desperate characters and wide-eyed optimists, heartache, tears and laughter including an appearance by Fiona Apple. The latter’s distinctive, husky voice joins with him on the gorgeous All In Good Time, a former Song of the Day here. Other highlihts include the sunny, delicate, intricate strings on many tracks and gorgeous lyrics, from Anyone’s Game, or You Never Know (“Don't you wanna know how far you're gonna go? Fickle as tomorrow talking to a wind chime”) Sweet Talk, Cutting It Close, Yellow Jacket, or the closing track Angels Go Home. Overall, through heartbreak and laughter, there’s a warm sense of acceptance as his voice sensitively and effortlessly sails these smooth, gliding, lovely numbers. Out on Sub Pop.
