Only three months since his fierce, high-octane LP Fear of The Dawn, the now Nashville-based artist’s second of the year is more of an folk songwriting record, with guitar, piano, some additional strings, with the feel of evening porch rendition, and even harks back to the more acoustic White Stripes numbers. Opener A Tip From Me has a classic early 70s Rolling Stones feel, All Along The Way is stripped right back to acoustic guitar and voice, as is the beautiful Love Is Selfish. Queen of the Bees meanwhile is has a stompy, vaudeville feel. I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love) is a catchy bluesy jazz fusion, while If I Die Tomorrow is another standout with a an acoustic country style with added flute to add a little psychedelia, as well as the freeflowing Madman from Manhattan (also see recent live tour video). Another fine record, very different and more DIY from his last, but linked by a contrasting version of the single Taking Me Back, making a great companion to show the sheer diversity of his ever outpouring talents. Out on Third Man Records.
