Now 70, her voice is as strong as ever, and this 20th studio album in a five-decade career is filled with strong songwriting, more in the style of her 80s pop than 70s folk, but with impressive moments of emotional power. Already There is a love song with obvious appeal, but the strongest material here is where there’s intimacy in her delivery and the music is stripped back to mainly guitar or piano such as the defiant Glorious Madness, To Be loved, To Anyone Who Will Listen, or Think About Me, while the title track has strangely alluring electronica opening. Pop, folk, jazz, gospel and reggae are all here from an enduring, often underrated artist, still with much to say about current times, whose back catalogue, beyond the best known numbers such as Love and Affection, Me Myself I or Drop The Pilot, is also always worth exploring. Out on BMG.
