The favourite of all former Smiths releases a double album made up of four gradually released 4-song EPs written in isolated lockdown, showing his dynamic range of musicianship and a common theme seeking empathy and unity. That particular angle comes most powerfully in Lightning People, a song dedicated to those commonly wanting the world to be a better, more harmonious place in these troubled times. Other standouts include Spirit Power and Soul, Ariel, Sensory Street, Night and Day and the closing track, Human. While Marr’s singing isn’t his greatest asset, it has become noticeably stronger of the years, but it is his guitar work that forever shines, with style that mix various parts of his career, from the jangling to the electronica spread across these 16 songs that grow with each listen. Strong, honest and heartfelt. Out on New Voodoo/BMG.
