One half of Run The Jewels, the Atlanta rapper and social activist Michael Santiago Render releases a powerful, articulate, and frank autobiographical solo LP, candidly exploring his childhood and more of the other side to his Killer Mike persona. As well as relating about the stresses and toxicity of growing up as a young black man (the cover picture of him a nine-year-old captures innocence and experience) the most potent concentrate on the key women in his life - the teenage mother he has lost, the grandmother who brought him up, explored in the stark song Motherless with fabulous guest vocalist Eryn Allen Kane. There’s uncompromising toughness and tenderness aplenty here, set to some gospel and soul backing and of course his slick, intelligent rapping. Other highlights include Slummer (about teenage pregnancy he caused), the electronica-infused Scientists & Engineers, which includes old friends fellow Atlantans André 3000 and Future, Run with Dave Chappelle and Young Thug, the hard-hitting Down By Law with the high soaring voice of CeeLo Green, and Don’t Let The Devil with his his Jewel parter El-P. Out on Loma Vista.
