A set of catchy, cutting lyrical diatribes against disappointing exes punctuates this eclectic, clever, darkly ironic release of pop and other styles, in a second LP by the south London Brit School graduate with a strong powerful voice. Conceited is among the standouts, with a strutting guitar riff and lyrics such as “You bought me some flowers, I gave them to someone else / Told me that you loved me, you're just talking to yourself.” Messy has a lovely light touch in sound, juxtaposed with punchy sweary, passive aggressive lyrics in which she mimics a voice with “Okay, so yeah, I smoke like a chimney / I'm not skinny and I pull a Britney / Every other week / But cut me some slack.” Wish You Were Dead is a gorgeous soulful number that again hits you with these lyrics leading for the punchy title Can you come around? / Fuck me nice / Pull my hair / Sing me lullabies/ We can pretend that we're in love …When you come around / I'll wear red/ I'll forget all the awful things you've ever said / Though we can pretend that we're in love.” Big Brown Eyes has a catchy reggae skank with handclaps, while Intrusive Thoughts is a more gentle, dreamy folk that harks towards Elliott Smith, but again with bubbling as she addresses her own inner dialogue: “Fuck you, intrusive thoughts / You intrude on everything / This better shut you up / Upping my meds again.” The Outro is a candid spoken word address about seeking self-love and peace. A charming, darkly funny journey with strong tunes and heaps of personality. Out on Day One Music / Universal.
