Flamboyant, dynamic, cinematic, this sparkling sophomore LP is summons up striking 70s and spacey effervescent pop and disco from the Los Angeles-based electro-pop duo of Mica Tenenbaum and multi-instrumentalist and producer Matthew Lewin, and is mixed by Dave Fridmann. Progressing from their 2021 debut album, Mercurial World, the range of textures and sounds has broadened, sometimes exploying a grand, retro feel, such as on the single and former Song of the Day Death & Romance with its classic piano pop sound, leading into the gentler Fear, Sex, all the while Tenenbaum’s breathy voice offers a cute intimacy, before the funky syncopation of Vampire In The Corner in which her voice suddenly soars. First track She Looked Like Me! begins like opening a box of curious tricks, with a series of chopped samples evoking film and trains running. Killing Time trips along like catchy summer pop, Image has rippling spacey synths, Watching T.V. is low-key, talky synth pop but leaps unexpectedly in volume, while Tunnel Vision feels unremarkable at first but builds to an anarchic, thunderously loud and intense conclusion. Two of the catchiest and strongest are That’s My Floor with its shooting star synths and funky bass, and the glittering 70s disco of Cry For Me, before the duo throw the full kitchen sink into the finale song - The Ballad of Matt & Mica. Filled with surprises and clever invention, this is sparkling musical champagne. Out on Mom+Pop Records.
