A deliciously experimental folk and electronica release by the Margate-based musician and producer from Tunng and the project Lump about home comforts, staying in, dining tables. cucumber salads and more, joined by the warm, intimate voice of the splendid Anna B Savage. With saxophone, clarinet, a lovely spongey sounding 6-string bass, guitars and light percussion alongside keyboards and other pings, boings and sampled voices, its a recipe of gentle delight. Opener Lie Down sets the tone with that minimalistic crispness and sound, the phrase repeated with a selection of sampled voices and “remember the quiet evenings”, evocative of those a sort of domestic bliss of beautifully sycopated creativity, the smell of home cooked food simple chores and craft. Table imagines the conversations and scenes witnessed by an old French oak dining table at Lindsay’s home, charting whispered family secrets to partying Christmases to drunken dancing. Ruins In Reverses is also rich in fabulous rhythmic oddness and jazz sax splurges. Other highlights include the punchy Pretender To Surrender, also decorated by the beautiful hovering vocals of co-writer Savage. who appears on all but one of the songs which sometimes have echoes of Kate Bush’s vocal experimentalism. This songs also touches on the recurring cucumber theme, followed up in the tasty number Kachumber, a song that gently stirringly recreates a salad based on that key ingredient (“share with a friend”). Other beautiful tracks include Two Blues, It’s All For You, the quirky electronica piece Do What, and the gorgeous closer I Was The Thief. All blissfully crisp and tasty. Hopefully there’ll be a Part 2 for afters. Out on Moshi Moshi Records.
