Sunnily uplifting and defiant in style and lyrics, this third album by the 33-year-old east London soul and R&B singer features guest co-vocalists, but with the exception of a real beauty with Lianne La Havas, shines out best on her own. Woman, with Lianne, is a standout (how could it not be?) but along with this, even when heartbreak and other relationship difficulties are the topic, there her bright, multi-syllable delivery is attractive and starry, from the title track to Messy Love, Glad That You’re Gone, the self-restraint-themed Wait, and Burn Out, which is a self-warning against success. But with a Grammy nomination already, that success appears assured, but judging by her songs, the Guildhall jazz vocal graduate Neo Jessica Joshua appears likely to keep it in perspective with a naturally positive outlook. Out on RCA.
