Rolling back the years, and of course recorded in a barn (in Colorado), this new release by the Canadian-American veteran is everything you’d expect – full of tough and tender songs, from the acoustic and gentle to the stormy electric. Song of the Seasons is a beautiful, wistful acoustic opener, Heading West tells of Young’s fatherless childhood years, and Nils Lofgren joins the fray to replace the retired Frank “Poncho” Sampedro with fully amped-up guitar on Canerican, where Young expresses his joint Canadian-US identity, and Human Race is a thunderous, angry call-out now about the climate-change affected future, and the “children of fire and flood”. Other standouts include Shape of You, Welcome Back and the tender closing track, Don’t Forget Love. A barnful of produce to satisfy all the needs of any Neil Young fan and moe. Out The Other Shoe Productions / Reprise Records.
