A beautifully tender, serene and touching new LP by the former Maccabees singer and visual artist, the LP named after his Lisbon art studio, with his high, pure voice complemented by various co-collaborators including William Doyle (see also his 2024 album), Katy J Pearson and Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale. The latter appears on the fabulous rippling piano, whispering vocals and krautrocky momentum of former Song of The Day, Dig. LOJA though is a gallery of treasures, and Weeks recently performed a series of gallery gigs to go alongside his artworks. With that ethereal sound and voice, there’s many moments that will remind listeners of Talk Talk, alongside deliciously crisp, sensitive instrumentation and fabulous musicianship. Other highlights include the opener Longing, then Best Night, which soars into strings from a catchy percussive opening and refers to beautiful Lisbon evenings, Wake Up’s delicate pizzicato synths and dripping sounds, My Love Is (Daylight Saving) featuring Pearson, the sunny melancholy of Good To See You, the close-mic intimacy of Sorry, and then the vividly slow and gorgeous closer Beautiful Place, a profound song about the after the mystery death of a person on a beach, capturing the strange scenes of reverential hush by onlookers, and the scenes as they are carried away by medical services, while, with waves lapping, new arrivals on the beach appear without any knowledge of what has just occurred. Floating, sad and beautiful. Out on Fiction Records.
