An uncannily perfect reflection but very enjoyable throwback to mainstream singer-songwriter pop from the mid 1970s in the style of ABBA, Carly Simon, Carol King and more by the 29-year-old folk and indie artist from Los Angeles. On opener Only For Tonight there are those piano flourishes from Dancing Queen and from even further back some echoes of Sittin' In the Dock of the Bay. What I Need and Slipping Away has definite elements of Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac with a country twist, while Imposter very much echoes Carly Simon and even more so on Don't Feel Like Myself and the title track with Pearl's voice also tone perfect. As derivative as it all is, this is still great songwriting embracing a soft-country pop era with all the wide colours, soft focus sounds and rockin' good choruses beautiful piano-based melodies. Out on Kanine.
