Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s heavy rock heroes roll on with their fourth album, another blast furnace of rich, all-engulfing sound, existential philosophy, psychedelia and the thunderous presence of early Black Sabbath. With singer Matthew Baty’s roaring voice, Adam Ian Sykes’s stormy, fuzzy lead guitar and the return of former drummer Ewan Mackenzie, John-Michael Joseph Hedley’s beefy bass sound and mischievous stage presence, the band as a whole make for an arresting, and highly entertaining live experience by one of the most likeable bunch of blokes to take a stage. This album also explores more psychedelic territory and a few quieter moments (well, just a few). Standouts include Ultimate Hammer (“I will admit /That I'm frightened by the speed / And turbulence/ Needed to fly around the sun … what a time / To be Alive”), Mr Medicine, the industrially evocative and epic Big Rig, the slower, giant see-sawing Terror’s Pillow, and hellish, disturbing distortions and doom-laden chanting of horror movie-style track The Weatherman. Elemental! Out on Rocket Recordings.
