Minimalist yet expansive, restlessly upbeat with a dark undertone, a second wonderfully fresh, innovative and alternative indie LP by the drums, violin and bass trio of Toby Burroughs, Rosa Brook, and Tom Jones, following 2019’s PZ1 debut sandwiching two EPs. The fat thrum of bass, the steady synchopated beat, the jitter of bow strings, a plinky scattering of background electronica alongside ethereal vocals make for this very appealing formula, with immediate standouts such as past Song of the Day the anti-Brexit, anti-Tory Pest Control, Failing, and Slightly Shaking Cells, as well as toe-tapping Faulty Receiver, but of the slower tracks, it’s rewarding also to immerse in the dark, layered menace of M6 Toll, the ghostly oddness of Heavenly, the spidery Shut Up, the eccentric echoing of opener What You Came For, or the delicate, crackly bounce of Somambulance. Wonderfully experimental and original. Out on PRAH Recordings.
