An excellent third album by the east London be-leafed electro-krautrock-dance-pop band bursts with vigour and ideas, themed and fuelled by a troubled world coming out of lockdown in this folllow-up to their last, Stunning Luxury. The woodlouse of real estate and other infestations from developers still wriggle into their lyrics, as well the the double-edged sides of technology, as well as the threat of imminent ecological and economic collapse. We already profiled the frenetic Rhythm Is Our Business on Song of the Day, and this album has a variety of pace and leafier shade to enjoy too, from slow builds of pace to a larger range of sounds from electronic to live brass and percussion. Other standouts include the opening title track, the jittery The Evidence, the wonderfully wriggly Psithurhytm, the odd and ploddy Susurrations (In The Forest) and the spreading wibbly-wobbly roots of Shifting Basslines of the Cornucopians. Before lockdown their momentum was huge and sadly stopped in its tracks, but hopefully this year forest will spread and flourish.
As the band put it: “Some might say that Forest Of Your Problems explores the anxiety and guilt towards the relentless destruction of the planet’s ecosystems. Others might tell you that it’s just us asking which tribe you’re in. The Business Imp, The Nemophile, The Cornucopian and The Protester all want to save you, take you to the moon, smother you in wellness or just sell you a tree to hug. It’s all valid, we can’t tell you what’s right or wrong. Everyone needs a tribe. It’s a dark, fearful world out there. Take care on the path through the forest of your problems.”
Out on The Leaf Label Ltd as well as Bandcamp.
