Classic, timeless, tender, soulful pop in this 85-minute double LP by the Norwegian artist spans many of love’s perspectives, with influences from Joni Mitchell to Frank Sinatra, Gilberto Gil to Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as a variety of films. Mixing folk, soul, 80s pop, and at times a lounge feel, such as on the title track. Other standouts include the opener, Guarantee That I’d Be Loved, which begins with the scenario of talking someone down from suicide, but revealing very frank, shifting motives; the shuffling, soaring Summer In Verse; the catchy Cut, the funky Special Needs with Felicia Douglass, the orchestral, Simon & Garkunkel and Leonard Cohen-reminiscent Now She Sleeps Beside Me, and Alone In The Night (featuring fellow Norwegian experimental pop artist Aurora). From start to finish a class act, with high, sophisticated production values, an even higher, expressive voice, and perfectly crafted songs that seem to express the beautiful landscape of his homeland through this polished prism, pain and pleasure of love. Out on PLZ.
