After many strong singles and EPs, a bold, dynamic, blistering punk and post-punk debut by the Dublin four-piece, tackling turbulent existential crises with dark passion and wit. The distinctive rage and delivery of vocalist Karla Chubb, with the visceral sounds of guitarist Colm O’Reilly, alongside bassist Sam McCann and drummer Jack Callan create a stormy musical climate, regularly flooding into an ominously dark cloud of foreboding. That is evident from the slow build into punchy explosion of opener Ticking (“Am I alive?”). Cathedral grows from a scratchy menace (maybe that’s the beauty, that’s the pain”), and the band’s dynamism is even more evident with the quiet, almost delicate start to Shadow Of A Doubt which goes on to address trauma with an explosive catharsis from Chubb: “Would you help me stop the screams?” Can’t Get Enough Of It adds a new texture with acoustic guitars and insomnia. Other standouts include the brilliantly punchy chorus of Literary Mind, the ghostly Shaking Their Hands, and the closing title track. Stormy, angry never complacent, full of energy and unpredictability, overall a fabulous debut that will blow away the New Year cobwebs. Out on City Slang.
