A rock dinosaurs’ indulgent dirge? Far from it. This first LP of new material by the veterans for 18 years, and perhaps their final one, goes with a bang – echoing some of their 70s rock, blues, and country infused pomp. Mick Jagger is still in fine voice, and Keith Richards’ riffs feel timeless vibrant, and producer Andrew Watt helps capture that classic sound. If this is their final album material (they released an LP of blues covers, Blue & Lonesome, in 2016), it’s pretty damn Stonesy and meaty, and the much missed Charlie Watts and his effortless drums even appears on a couple of numbers thanks to some recording before his death. Standout is perhaps Sweet Sounds of Heaven, with stellar guests Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, while Bite My Head Off features Paul McCartney on a number that nods towards a punk raw energy. Angry is pure unrecontructed sexy rock band Stones, Elton John comes on another 70s-style Live By The Sword, while Dreamy Skies is that familiar slower, country-blues Stones, and there’s even a token Keith on lead vocals song - Driving Me Too Hard. The album signs of with an appropriate cover of their biggest influence (it all stems from the blues of course) - Muddy Waters’ Rolling Stones Blues. At 80 years old, still they’re a rock still tumblin’ and rollin’ and the diamond geezers Mick, Keith, Ronnie, with friends, have polished retrospective of their career. Out on Polydor.
