Perfect for long, dark, wintry nights, a beguilingly beautiful mix of medieval, folk, ghostly tales, fables and he eroticism of black magic mixed with the modern by Katharine Blake of Mediaeval Baebes and Miranda Sex Garden, collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Michael J York (Coil, Current 93, The Utopia Strong, and Teleplasmiste). This is wonderful, otherworldly material, from the title track to nursery rhyme-like Roundelay, which uses words by Thomas Chatterton, taken from from Minstrel’s Song from Aella, with just a dash of Magnet’s Fire Tale from The Wicker Man of course, to the dreamlike twists and beautifully harsh harmonies of Dahna, or The Queen Rides Alone, or The City In The Sea, where a host of other sounds intertwine. The range of instruments, with some added guest players, is extraordinary, capturing a true flavour of medieval and other eras and locations, from descant, and treble recorder, double recorders, violin, bagpipes, tanpura, duduk, piano, double bass, various electric guitar pedals, hurdy-gurdy, viola da gamba, begena, rebab, various percussion, lyre, zither, guzheng, amyl, horns, a variety of synthesizers and field recordings. Ghostly, vivid, dreamlike, album of rich, strange, evocative sounds and voices, Gregorian chants, Arabian-style folk, conjuring up something unlike anything else released this year.
