Another peach of an LP from Kate Stables and band, whose voice especially with her acoustic alternative folk, effortlessly caresses the microphone with clarity, beauty, profundity and minimalism, and is produced by Gruff Rhys. It’s an album presented to chronicle a world of mistakes and mishaps, cruel circumstances, and universe-driven surprises, embraces the concept of outrospection – the idea that you get to know oneself by developing relationships and empathic thinking with others. Typical of it, with crisp rhythm and ripples of brass, comes for example Inside Outside, and single that distilling ideas of existentialism, the movement of molecules, and cause and effect with the ease of a bird on the wing, intelligent lyrics and vivid images flowing in the most exquisite ways. The same goes for other standouts such as More Change, Stuck In A Room, the title track, the pigeon of Scabby Head and Legs, and the “emotional Buckaroo” game metaphor on Doomed or More Doomed, though and pretty much the entire album too. Utterly gorgeous and seemingly effortless. See also band member Rozi Plain’s solo album out earlier this year. Out on Rough Trade.
