Sprightly, catchy and filled with hooks, the Tanzania-born London singer, producer and musicians full debut has something from many genres, from funk to African, jazz, pop, hip hop, reggae, gospel and soul. Opener Enough is one of the most upbeat, danceable anti-war, and anti-corruptions songs you can imagine, while the relationship-themed Brand New is as fresh and funky and chatty a hip-hop song as you’ll hear all year. Zulu Gang is a reggae number with brass body, Just A Little has many a clever guitar lick, while slower soul number Suitcase of Sins begins with a gospel feel but soon moves in and out of fast 60s-style soul pop. There are cheesier moments, especially on some of the lyrics on closing hip-hop track with collaborator Nines, Fly ‘Em High, and on the title track there’s a glitzy, bouncy jazz style in this song about drug dealing and crime, but there’s something of universal sugary appeal about Tiggs’s style - and shooting out with so many hooks and styles, he could well find mainstream success if one of these were to become a summer hit. Out on Alacran Records.
