“The best actors do not let the wheels show.” – Milan Kundera
“In business, I believe that if you focus only on the journey, you'll miss the whole point of the enterprise. There has to be a goal, an end game of some kind; otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels. Yes, the journey is important, but the destination is important, too.” – Ivanka Trump
Well. We await the outcome. With popcorn.
As soon as it was nominated, the A list was only ever going to start with this one. A marmite band, Roadhouse Blues by the Doors begins our list, with thanks to Isabelle Forshaw.
Steely Dan’s Do It Again has had numerous nominations down the years and still sounds pretty peachy. Thanks to Olive Butler for this one.
Magicman added Michael Kiwanuka’s Rolling, one of many highlights of his much praised album from last year. Talent to burn. This record has been a turntable perennial at Para Mansions this past year and will be for a good while to come.
Nicko nominated Bunny Wailer’s marvellous Walk The Proud Land. A remake of the original Wailer’s song Rude Boy. Wheel and turn? Spin, then spin back.
Next up, amylee suggested Ike and Tina Turner’s take of John Fogerty’s original. Proud Mary is one of those songs that can take a multitude of interpretations. This is the one for me.
SOHN released his first song The Wheel in 2012. I vaguely remembered this, but not how much I liked it. Lovely stuff recommended by Loud Atlas.
A new one for me, Andrew Beaujon co-founded Teenbeat Records and was in a number of bands, including Eggs. From the 1998 mini-album A Raw-boned June, here’s Truer Than the Wheel. Thanks to the returning Uneasy Listening.
The Limiñanas take on the Lords of the New Church song Russian Roulette was the song I played most this week. Hypnotic. The mighty original is here. Thanks to Shoegazer for putting this one up.
A couple of strong entries from I Am Kloot this week. The marvellous Ferris Wheels nominated by Toffee Boy nudges it for me.
Catherine Wheels is a melodic marvel from Crowded House and a long time favourite. A big thank you (again) to Toffee Boy.
Mia Sheard released Catherine Wheel in 2002. This song, nominated by BanazirGalbasi, never quite goes where you are expecting and is all the better for it.
Another nailed on A lister. Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life has been zedded for the Coltrane version. nosuchzone suggested Billy playing with Kay Davis. Wonderful.
Which leaves the last of this baker’s dozen. The gorgeous Wheels by Mark Lanegan had much love this week. Bethnoir commented: “Love the saxophone on this. Well I love everything about it really’.” Donds to that and thanks to happyclapper for the original nom.
Thanks all for another great week. Not been so attentive these past few months. Will try harder.
As ever, huge thanks to all who put up their nominations and to the Landlord and Marco for keeping this place open and operational.
