Another weather-related number for a wet Easter holiday Monday, written by Peebles, her partner Don Bryant and Bernie Miller in 1973 when stepping out during a downpour in Memphis. Played at walking pace, with Peebles, the Al Green of female vocalists, and superb brass arrangements, and that evocative pitter-patter rhythm, it remains a soul masterpiece of melancholy and metaphor. No wonder it was later covered also by disco band Eruption (1978) and Tina Turner's 1985, somewhat less subtle, pop-beat version. The Peebles original, certainly the best, is not available in the UK on YouTube, so a Spotify link is here instead.
I can't stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
Hey window pane do you remember
How sweet it used to be
When we were together everything was so grand
Now that we've parted
There's one sound that I just can't stand
I can't stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can't stand the rain against my window
Cause he's not here with me
Alone with the pillow
Where his head used to lay
I know you've got some sweet memories
But like the window you ain't got nothin' to say
I can't stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can't stand the rain against my window
It just keeps on haunting me
Hey rain, get off my window
Cause he's not here with me.
