Following Nick Cave's Jubilee Street, let's continue down the magnificent but murky musical road with this 1967 soul classic by the Mississippi-born singer from album You Got My Mind Messed Up. It was written by Memphis and Stax songwriters Dan Penn and Chips Moman (who also played guitar for many Phil Spector recordings) during a 30-minute break in Memphis in the middle of a DJ convention. It was inspired by cheating at that game, but the lyrics hover around the theme of secret infidelity and the guilt that surrounds it. Published on the Goldwax Records label, Carr's powerful singing clearly displays his gospel roots style, and the song builds powerfully, backed by a horn section and two-thirds of the way through, changing up a key.
At the dark end of the street
That's where we always meet
Hiding in shadows
Where we don't belong
Living in darkness
To hide our wrongs
You and me at the
Dark end of the street
You and me
I know time is
Gonna take it's toll
We have to pay for
The love that we stole
It's a sin and
We know it's wrong
Oh, but our love
Keeps coming on strong
Steal away to the
Dark end of the street
They're gonna to find us
They're gonna to find us
They're gonna to find us
Lord, someday
You and me at the
Dark end of the street
You and me
