More female-led reggae today, with a song written by guitarist Dennis Bovell, a longtime collaborator with Linton Kwesi Johnson. Janet Kay Bogle (she shortened her name as a performer) was born in London, and was spotted at a rehearsal studio by Aswad keyboardist Tony "Gad" Robinson. With her distinctively high voice, Kay was originally being lined up to sing a cover of Minnie Riperton’s Lovin’ You. But this record was a hit in 1979, and was seen as the first “lover’s rock” ever performed on Top of the Pops, combining a broken heart with a smile, and that beautiful, easy reggae beat. Kay has also dipped into acting, but has continued a musical career ever since, with her last album, Idol Kay, released in 2012 on Universal Music Japan.
