Completing a Michael Caine leading role trio, the beautiful, haunting theme composed by one of film and TV’s all-time great composers who is best known for the James Bond films. This extraordinary piece from the 1965 spy film directed by Sidney J. Furie and based on Len Deighton's novel includes wonderful parts for flute and horns, but most outstanding is the main melody played on the cimbalom, an Eastern European instrument often used in gypsy music, comprised of a trapezoidal box with metal strings which are hit by beaters, not unlike the hammered dulcimer. The slow shuffle sound builds around it, with flute and trumpet in the distance, moving to a deep ending of sinister foreboding. Of all Barry’s great works, few are cooler and more influential, or evoke the style and glamor of that spy thriller 60s genre. Below is also the opening credits with the Harry Palmer character in his kitchen.
