To mark yesterday's 40th anniversary since the hugely innovative and influential glam-rocker's untimely death, as an alternative to the Ride A White Swan breakthrough, a grittier, sexier hit (titled Bang a Gong in the US) from the 1971 album Electric Warrior. Bolan said it was inspired by Chuck Berry's song Little Queenie. Tony Visconti produced, Ian McDonald from King Crimson played saxophone, Rick Wakeman contributed to piano, and Elton John mimed the part on Top of the Pops. Ironically the great DJ John Peel told Bolan he didn't like it and they fell out for the remaining six years of Bolan's life.
