A wonderfully odd and beautiful release featuring field recordings of the titular resonantly relaxing amphibians by the woodwind-and-key-wielding, sculptural-papier-mâché-hat-wearing duo of Paul Jones and Stephen Black (aka Sweet Baboo). It comes from their forthcoming album, Walks, their first LP of completely original compositions, set to be released 10th May on PRAH Recordings.
The frogs themselves were recorded by Jones from under a bridge when on holiday near Port De Cruz on the island of Madeira. The creatures’ calls bookend some improvised electric harpsichord by Jones, with clarinets later added by Black, who adds of the piece: “Frogs feels like a call to arms, a slow march where Paul and I are slowly walking, with purpose, through thick, sticky, mud. We have an army of frogs by our sides and we feel invincible.”
The release follows renegade reinterpretation records Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol. 1 (2018) and Vol. 2 (2022), which reworked cult ambient classics by the likes of Robert Wyatt, Arthur Russell and Beverly Glenn-Copeland.
