Evocative, serenely beautiful and poetic, this new single by the Brighton band captures that Proustian-type moment of unleashed feelings, senses and memories, in this case hearing Ella Fitzgerald on the radio, and is the title track heralding their forthcoming album out on 8 November via Bella Union. Singer and guitarist Soph Nathan expands on this idea: “I have particularly vivid memories; acid images that seem forgotten but are suddenly triggered by a smell or taste or sound - the Proust effect! Normally it’s caused by something that’s harder to grasp, but I wrote this song about a time Ella Fitzgerald came on the radio and it took me back to how I was feeling the first time I heard it.” It also includes a lovely string arrangement and input from Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who helped bring the song to life in its early stages. This song follows previous singles Relief and Something About Me Being A Woman. To explore and enjoy more by Our Girl, see also the other embedded links below.
Ella fills my ears as nostalgia wraps itself around
Whatever I was doing at the time
Fills my throat clouds my lungs
The good kind
The good kind
I’ve got this kind of memory
And it’s kind to me generally
I’ll see or touch or taste or hear it
And fall through time before I felt it
Through my throat to my eyes
That heartbreaking surprise
The good kind
The good kind
Memories shift my sight as reality drags on my mind
Whatever I was doing at the time
Floods straight back to my eyes
Whatever I was feeling at the time
Takes on a, new life
The good kind
The good kind
The good kind
The good kind
