Following last year’s 1984 album, Manchester’s pioneering and highly influential post-punk trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson return with a punchy, potent, stripped-back sound with a thrumming, dark-funk flavour, produced by the prolific and brilliant Dan Carey. It’s a release that just features the three core members playing the instruments and feels direct and fresh, not just in the music, but in lyrics, which in general address world problems with a no-nonsense directness over 10 tracks. It’s packed with bangers, some with added talky sections. A particular highlight is the opener and (almost) title track, All Comes Down To This. Other standouts include Keep It Real, We All Need, God Knows, Estate Kings and closer Dorothy Says, a tribute to the pithy wit of the late, great Dorothy Parker. Out on Mute Records.
