The English singer-songwriter returns with her fifth LP, following 2019’s No Words Left, with a triumph-against-adversity comeback of beautiful piano-based songs fuelled by difficulty and yet also hope. With severe back problems, she suffered pregnancy-related osteoporosis after medical tests revealed she had eight broken vertebrae, following her son Otis's birth. Unable to play the guitar, she turned to piano, and this has re-shaped her style from her more Joni Mitchell-inspired folk-pop to a new innovative fusion of 70s sheen Karen Carpenter-style pop, syncopated jazz, soul, and a touch of R&B. The final track, The Racket, is a a fabulous mix of perky cross-rhythms and soaring melody, one that sums up the spirit of the record. Other highlights include Light As Grass, Could You Help Me, the gentle Whatever You Want, the serene Sail Away, and Life’s Too Short. Out on Communion Records.
