Simple, soothing, gently philosophical but also emotional songs come with the breathy, tender voice of the New York singer-songwriter in this second album of lovely acoustic folk-pop, following 2018’s Pendulum, as well as several EPs. Badru has a talent for gently capturing zeitgeists and universal feelings is several songs, not least the opener A Little Mad: “Scrolling through our screens / When we get a moment to ourselves / Reality is altered, nervous system overwhelmed / Afraid to be forgotten, addicted to our phones / Yet the more we are connected, the more that we feel alone.” The beautiful title track also reveals a turmoil behind the sweetness of her sound. “Inside my heart there was an earthquake / Everything I knew fell away / As I was stranded digging my grave / The birds were singing anyway.” On the whole, over the 10 track across 30 minutes, this is a wonderfully soothing, Sunday stroll sort of a listen, from the swaying upbeat pop of Life to Live, the melancholy waltz time of In The Making, the yearning for recovery and solitude in Boundaries, the sun-dappled Side of the Moon, the darker moods of Tunnel Vision, all the way to the gentle, but also striking instrumental The Calm, which suddenly builds and swells with orchestral strings to end in a positive, self-healing mood, resting towards the power of stillness and reflection. Beautiful. Out on Nettwerk Music Group.
