Mellow, easy-paced and gently decorated with piano and classical strings, this timeless, mid-70s psych-pop-rock is the third from the Los Angeles singer-songwriter who echoes elements of Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and King Crimson. Filled with tenderness, heartbreak and gentle humour, building on previous LPs Harlequin (2016) and Caravan Château (2020), there’s plenty of melancholy, but also wondrous melodies, not least the eccentric, catchy Egyptian Cadillac, previously a Song of the Day. Other standouts include Our Love Remains, Ivory (with a McCartney lookalike in the video), Sorrows Blue Tapestry, Ladies of Romeo, the woodwind-rich Gemini Underwater (one of several tracks working with arrangements by Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth) and another fine piano ballad, Juniper & Lamplight. Out on Weird World.
