A mellifluous weave of jazz, soul, poetry hip hop by the east London rapper, producer and instrumentalist aka Alfa Sekitoleko with a nod to his various musical influences, especially the capital's vibrant jazz scene. While opening track Teki could be regarded in the noodly guitar spectrum, this album, which is his third, and first for another label, Anti, after his self-released breakthrough in 2017, Antiphon, and 2019’s Structuralism, really comes into its own with the beautiful melodies of People, with lovely vocalist Kaya Thomas-Dyke and the mix of guitar and classical strings, and the dominant trumpet and a variety of other instruments on later tracks Run Out, Last Card (Bumper Cars) with its maternal upbringing reference, Coasting, Attune, as well as the classical strings interlude of Once A Year. With a trainline announcement of East Ham station, Alfa Mist brings in a mellow trip hop vibe on Mind The Gap, with guest Lex Amor and last track Organic Rust, both songs autobiographical spoken musings, first on this upbringing, and then later mortality. But it's the meandering melodies that give this album its most distinctive flavour, a late-night sound with a seamless flow. Out on Anti.
