A novel form of “compilation reimagined as a dialogue” LP by the acclaimed, serene-voiced American singer-songwriter, showcasing five different lesser-known artists on Side A, and then covering other songs by them on Side B. The five in question, all on her mini-sub Jagjaguiar label somethingscosmic, bring contrasting but various impressive styles, particularly the explosive grunge-goth-pop fire of Poppy Jean Crawford with Glamorous, and Blood by Ryan Weinstein aka Coffin Prick, who brings a particular Talking Heads dynamic. But though also exibit a David Bowie influence. Sarah Grace White, Maxim Ludwig and Camp Saint Helene offer quieter, more reflective musical styles. with the latter a particularly evocative dreamy folk with a ghostly, juddering guitar. Olsen then returns with her own form of cavernous sound and ghostly, country-tinged and often delicately beautiful vocal delivery, taking a more conventional route with strummed guitar and/or gently played piano, performing different songs by each of the artists. What this brings is perhaps inconclusive, other than the show that great songwriting is certainly in evidence in whatever way it is performed. Out on somethingscosmic / Jagjaguwar.
