After last year’s excellent debut LP, How To Be A God, the south-east London quartet return with another heady swirl of stylishly swaggering, stomping, darkly visceral 60s garage rock, psychedelia and with tasty echoes of 70s Bowie, Stooges, Cramps and Birthday Party-era Nick Cave. This is no fledgling band on their first, or even second rodeo, but seasoned musicians with a sharply mischievous rapport and obviously strong, seasoned songwriting skills shared between a front trio, who also all variously take lead and backing vocals – siblings Jasmine and James Daniels on keyboards and lead guitar respectively and Danny Rapscallion on bass, while drummer Nico Passalacqua adds thunderously intricate fills. Their songs are dynamic, dramatic, multi-sectioned, rich in changes of pace, emotively powerful chord sequences, striking melodies and sharp riffs, and while this second LP is a pithy eight tracks across just 28 minutes, its raw energy and range lend it a thrilling potency. From the rolling piano grooves and Stones-feel of opener Life’s Too Good, the punchy organ and fuzz guitar post-punk of Parliament of Magpies, the menacing meaty bass and stormy guitars and screams of Sicily Drip, the infectiously dirty stomp of Jagged Teeth with added sax, to the truly majestic, dynamic closer Swallow To Pill, this is another fabulously exciting, explosive, immensely enjoyable release, and even more fun when you catch the band live. Available via Bandcamp including a limited edition on blood-red vinyl.
