After 2020’s Grammy-nominated KiCk i Venezuela-born, Barcelona-based cyber-looking trans electronic artist Alejandra Ghers doesn’t do things by halves – returning with a daunting but fascinating quadruple release of albums of various styles with 47 songs across 147 minutes. Visually arresting, Arca’s work has influences as varied as Bjork, Prince, particularly when using his female alter-ego voice Camille (see Prada/Rakata below), Sia who features on Born Yesterday from Kick ii, Aphex Twin, Sophie, as well as Puerto Rican club sounds and reggaeton. Kick ii certainly takes its inspiration from the latter two, while Kick iii is billed as mutant club music. The entire release is something to dip in and out of, but there are some other interesting collaborators, such as Shirley Manson on Alien Inside on iiii, and from the same album Planningtorock on Queer, and the soft spoken voice of Ryuichi Sakamoto on Sanctuary from iiiii where he talks of “mutant faith” and being “post-human”. From that to the delicate vocals on iiiii’s Músculos, this is otherworldly, richly experimental, impenetrable in places but richly rewarding when given some time to let this world soak in. Out on XL Recordings.
